Scafatese Playbook: Your Unrivalled Campania Calcio Experience Beyond Naples

By Rita Casciello

Are you sure you know everything about football in the Campania region beyond Naples?

Just 30 minutes away from Diego Armando Maradona’s kingdom, there is a small place whose name is increasingly making waves.

Scafatese’s return to professional football has brought a new energy to the town of Scafati, with the club now in Serie C after an extraordinary run through the calcio pyramid.

The Canaries have completed a remarkable journey from Serie D, giving supporters the chance to experience the game at a higher level, while putting Scafati on the map for visiting fans.

For those arriving, there is much more to discover beyond the 90 minutes. Located in the province of Salerno and within easy reach of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, Scafati offers an opportunity to combine a football weekend with some of Campania’s most famous sights.

Everything you need to know is right here.

Where To Stay

Hotel Nelton on Via Michelangelo Nappi is a practical choice if you want to be close to Scafati while also having easy access to Pompeii. It sits in a quieter part of town and has a pool, private parking, restaurant and airport shuttle service. It is particularly handy for visitors travelling by car, and the pool is a real bonus during the hotter summer months.

Hotel America is another good option in Scafati, especially for visitors looking for a modern, comfortable base without paying the prices of staying in central Naples. The hotel describes itself as a low-cost option, although prices can rise during the busiest period (May-August).

Pompeii is a short journey away and the most popular option. It offers a wider choice of accommodation and gives football tourists the chance to explore one of Italy’s most visited attractions.

If the priority is the Scafatese game, staying in Scafati makes life easier. You are closer to the stadium and can avoid having to deal with Pompeii’s heavier tourist traffic on busy days. But do not rule out nearby towns, as there are plenty of options.

Where To Eat

Campania is one of Italy’s great food regions and Scafati is no exception, influenced by the neighbouring Neapolitan territory. Pizza is an obvious starting point. You are in the homeland of Neapolitan pizza, so a visit to local pizzerias is essential for any football trip.

Panoramica 53 is a 10-minute walk from Stadio Comunale Giovanni Vitiello and a great option if you want to experience a proper Neapolitan pizza before or after the game. The menu goes beyond the classics, with Neapolitan fried pizza, calzones, burgers and plenty of fried specialities. Pizzas generally cost around €6-€12 and this place is ideal for a quick bite or a longer meal.

Il Bugigattolo is even closer to the ground, less than five minutes away, but if you are thinking of going after the match, book a table as it does get busy.

Brick Lane is a pub on Corso Nazionale. It serves burgers and beers in a relaxed setting, making it a natural choice for supporters looking for somewhere after the final whistle.

Where To Drink

Bar Alba is a Scafati institution that has been around since 1964 and is much more than a traditional coffee bar. Located on Via Martiri d’Ungheria, it is a long-standing meeting point for locals, serving coffee, pastries, gelato, cocktails and aperitivo. It stays open until late and this is the place to go if you want to live the typical day or matchday in Scafati. Here, you get a feel for local life.

If you want something a little different, Boulevard Ten on Via Santa Maria delle Grazie combines a bar and lounge atmosphere with bowling.

Dalia Luxury, on Via Passanti, is a modern cafe and bar where you can stop for a drink, coffee or aperitivo. It is open from early in the morning through to the evening and offers a selection of food and drinks, making it suitable for pre-match breaks.

Pepe Cafe on Corso Nazionale is a popular local bar with a lively atmosphere and long hours. It is the kind of place where you can grab a coffee during the day and return later for a drink, as it stays open until around 2am.

Don’t Forget

Tickets are usually available the week before the game on Scafatese’s official website, where there is also information on where to buy tickets in the city.

Bring identification and allow time to get into the stadium, particularly at high-profile matches. And always check kick-off times before making travel arrangements, as they are subject to change.

Merchandise is available through the club’s online shop and at the official store on Via Chiesa Madre.

Did You Know?

Scafatese played two seasons in Serie B, the last in 1947-48. Promotion to Serie C in 2026 ended their 16-year wait for a return to the professional game, and the party was huge. The team travelled through Scafati on an open-top bus, surrounded by supporters in yellow and blue, lining the streets to celebrate. Fans did not simply cheer from the roadside, but reached up to the players to hand them food and drinks, turning the parade into something closer to a moving street party than a traditional trophy procession.

Getting There

Scafati is 35km from Naples International Airport. The easiest option is a taxi but there is also a direct shuttle that connects the airport with Scafati, as well as Pompeii and Naples city centre.

You can travel via Naples city centre, taking a bus (about €3) and then continuing by train from Napoli Centrale, also called Garibaldi. Scafati has its own railway station so it makes the journey easier if you’re staying there.

The Giovanni Vitiello Stadium is in Scafati and easily reachable on foot from most places in the town. The roads around Scafati and neighbouring Pompeii can become considerably busier at weekends, especially during the tourist season.

Need Another Football Fix?

One of the most interesting clubs is Sarnese 1926, based in nearby Sarno. They are in Serie D and play at the Stadio Comunale Felice Squitieri. This is another Campania club with a strong local identity. FC Pompei, practically on Scafati’s doorstep and playing in the fifth tier, are easy to catch when planning a football-heavy trip to the area. Check the fixture list before travelling, as kick-off times and venues can change during the season. And, of course, there’s always Napoli.
