On this day in 2006, Italy’s Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero broke German hearts in one of the best semi-final games witnessed at a World Cup.
Dortmund was the stage for a clash between two of the heavyweights and the game was lurching towards the dreaded penalty shootout before late, late goals from the Azzurri pair. Both of them crackers.
July 4 was also the day of another epic last-four encounter, 16 years earlier in Turin and this time it did go all the way to penalties.
Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce missed for England while West Germany scored four from four to book their place in the Italia 90 final against Diego Maradona’s Argentina in Rome.
But the game at the Stadio delle Alpi will always be remembered for Paul Gascoigne’s tears, with the midfielder being one of the breakout stars of the tournament after a run of performances that would soon lead to a move to Italy with Lazio.
That stadium in Turin was built for Italia 90 but did not last long. It was bulldozed in 2006 by Juventus and the club built their new arena on the same site, which opened in 2011.
Over time they have added the JHotel which does stay/ticket packages and there is also a shopping mall with restaurants, stores and bars next to the ground.
