France took a huge step towards World Cup glory on this day in 2018, beating Uruguay 2-0 in the quarter-finals in Russia with goals from Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann.
It was Griezmann who supplied the cross for Varane’s opener before giving the French breathing space just after the hour mark.
Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Varane played every minute for France in Russia, from their opening victory over Australia to the 4-2 win against Croatia in the final.
Varane, who played in his second World Cup final four years later as France lost to Argentina, arrived at Como in 2024 and has been there since hanging up his boots, focusing on youth development as part of the board of education.

He said at the time: “It’s totally a new role for me. A different challenge, but I really enjoy sharing my experience and still learning from football but on a different side. It’s quite interesting to share and promote and also participate in the development of the club and the future. This is something very exciting.”
Varane is heavily involved in the Como Elite Summer Camp which offers unique opportunities for 10-18-year-olds.
Meanwhile, as far as the first team is concerned, the Como project continues to go from strength to strength. They will make their Champions League debut in 2026-27 after finishing fourth in Serie A.
