Modena isn’t short of a location or two for a post-match pint. Few though come with the stamp of approval of a Serie A star.
Griffin’s Irish Pub sits on the corner of Largo Hannover and Via dei Gallucci – the city’s main artery for late nights and socialising into the early hours.
It possesses the best of both worlds. A fairy-light lit beer garden under the cover of overhanging wisteria plants that cling to the facade of the 30-year-old pub is perfect for summer nights. Inside, a cosy, rustic setting ideal for escaping the colder winter months awaits.
It’s in here you’ll find scarves on the wall, sport on TV, Guinness paraphernalia and the odd football shirt hanging from the rafters. That includes a Hibs top – an unwitting salute to one of the city’s Scottish residents.

“Just to say there’s a Hibs top up in the bar we go to is so strange,” Josh Doig told Destination Calcio during a visit in May while reminiscing on the Serie B promotion celebrations he and his Sassuolo team-mates had enjoyed the previous season.
“The guy who owns it lived in Scotland for a bit. I spoke to him before and he decided to bring a bit of Scotland back.
“It’s a cool thing to have just around the corner if your family or your pals are here. They’ve got somewhere to go and have a wee drink.”
Griffin’s is also a popular haunt for Modena fans on matchday – a post-game go-to with yellow Canarini shirts standing out amongst the greenery that masks the front of the building.
A 20-minute walk from the ground, it’s the perfect opportunity to earn the drink – and food – awaiting you at the other end to toast another successful calcio outing.
