On This Day at the World Cup – June 8: It all Kicks Off at Italia 90

By Brian Lee

It was the first game of Italia 90 and the eyes of the world were on Milan’s San Siro as Diego Maradona led holders Argentina out for what was expected to be a routine victory over Cameroon.

But what played out was one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history – Francois Omam-Biyik scoring the only goal and the Africans finishing the game with nine men after red cards for Andre Kana-Biyik and Benjamin Massing.

Massing’s waist-high assault on a rampaging Claudio Caniggia, who had sailed past two Cameroon players on the right, has been replayed more than Omam-Biyik’s winner over the years.

Maradona had wowed the crowd with tricks and flicks before kick-off but the day belonged to the underdogs as they wrote another chapter into San Siro folklore.

Time is running out to visit this calcio cathedral – one of the world’s great sporting arenas –  with a deal in place to pull it down and put up a shiny new shared home for Inter and Milan before the 2032 Euros.

The 2026-27 Serie A fixtures have just been released so now is the time to start planning a trip to watch calcio royalty.
