Salernitana Stadium Guide: Stadio Arechi

By Emmet Gates

The Stadio Arechi in Salerno is home to some of Italy’s most boisterous fans.

Salernitana supporters have earned a reputation for being among the most passionate in the land, and this makes the Arechi, which was built in 1990 but is now undergoing transformation ahead of potentially hosting games for Euro 2032, a special venue to visit.

Here is all you need to know.

What Makes It Special?

The Arechi is the second-biggest stadium in the Campania region, with only the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Naples ahead of it. With its 37,800 capacity, when full, the Arechi is as intense a place there is on the peninsula.

It was built for football only. It is a rectangle of reinforced concrete with four separate stands, one on each side, and no corners joining them. There is no athletics track, so fans are close to the pitch from every seat.

A 2022 planning document for its redevelopment describes the building as brutalist, with touches of 1930s Italian rationalism, and very close to the English model of stadium.

The Curva Sud is steep and rises almost straight up from the pitch, in the style of grounds in Argentina. Organised support at Salernitana goes back to 1977, and in the 2014-15 season, the Curva Sud was voted the best curva in the third tier.

Neighbourhood Tips

The Stadio Arechi is close to the seafront, so there are plenty of options around for food and drink. La Terrazza di Marina, a lounge bar right on the waterfront, offers beautiful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Galleon Pub on Viale Antonio Palumbo is right next to the ground. You can grab a bite to eat as well as a pint, while Iso Sushi is on Via Generale Clark if that’s your go-to meal before a match.

Need To Know

Salernitana’s ultras sit in the Curva Sud Siberiano, to the right of the main stand. Since 2010 it has been dedicated to Carmine Rinaldi, known as Siberiano, the late leader of the ultras. He died in 2010 at the age of 46.

The ground is changing. The regional sports agency has started the first phase of a large rebuild, with demolition in the lower tier of the Curva Nord. The overall project is worth €140million. Under the current plan, Salernitana will move in August 2027 to a temporary 15,000-seat stadium at the Campo Volpe while the Arechi is rebuilt over two years. If you want to see the old Arechi, now is the time to go.
