How Como Welcomed Champions League Football to the Shores of the Lake

Como made the perfect start to life in the Champions League as they eased past RB Leipzig 4-1 in front of the new Curva Como at a packed Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

It was another huge milestone for Cesc Fabregas and his team, and they marked it in style with goals from Martin Baturina, Anastasios Douvikas, Assane Diao and Maximo Perrone in the first match at their home ground this season.

The club faced a race against time to get the Sinigaglia in line with UEFA standards after qualifying for the Champions League, and in just 90 days over the summer they were able to put up a new stand. The Curva Como, which houses the most vocal fans, is now closer to the action.

With stadium capacity restricted to around 11,000 for the Leipzig game, demand was sky-high and the tickets sold out in a few minutes. In the days leading up to the match, club president Mirwan Suwarso and his fellow directors gave up their allocation so older fans, who had waited the longest for such an occasion, could attend.

Supporters who were packed into bars and restaurants around the city would have been celebrating too. Fifteen venues, including Birrivico and Ostello Bello, are part of the Cheers4Como programme, an initiative that has been running since the 2021-22 campaign. Every time the team wins a game, home or away and in any competition, customers in the participating bars at the full-time whistle can have a free drink. Thursday night was Como’s third victory of the season.

Due to the work being carried out on the stadium, Como played their first three league matches away from home. They drew with Udinese on the opening weekend before winning at Genoa and Napoli. Parma are the first visitors to the Sinigaglia on Serie A duty in 2026-27, and tickets for home games are available on the club website.
