Como to Host Manchester United and PSG in Champions League

By Emmet Gates

European champions Paris Saint-Germain and English Premier League side Manchester United are heading for the Sinigaglia after Como discovered their opponents for their first Champions League campaign.

There will also be a return to Catalonia for Como boss Cesc Fabregas after his team were drawn to face his former side Barcelona.

Como will also host Leipzig and AEK Athens, and travel to take on Real Betis, Feyenoord and Lens. The French side won the second edition of the Como Cup just a few weeks ago.

European nights are coming to the lake after the Lariani finished fourth in Serie A last season, sparking wild celebrations throughout the city following their second season back in the top flight.

Como have spent the summer getting the Sinigaglia up to UEFA standards, starting work on the Curva Como, the liveliest stand in the stadium, as soon as the season finished in May. They are playing their first three games of this Serie A season away from home, before entertaining Parma on September 13.

At the ceremony in Monaco, Serie A champions Inter Milan were drawn against Liverpool, Club Brugge, Shakhtar Donetsk and Stuttgart at San Siro, with trips away to Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord and Slovan Bratislava confirmed.

Merseysiders will know what to expect from a trip to face Inter after watching their team win 1-0 there in the Champions League last December.

Roma have marquee games against Real Madrid, PSG and Manchester United, with Sporting, Lille, Fenerbahce, Bratislava and AEK Athens filling out their group-stage fixtures. The Giallorossi will welcome Madrid, Sporting, Lille and Bratislava to the Stadio Olimpico in their first appearance in the competition since 2018-19.

Max Allegri’s Napoli, meanwhile, will square off against Arsenal, Club Brugge, Bodo Glimt and Viking FK in Naples, with trips to Manchester City, Porto, Villarreal and newcomers Sabah from Azerbaijan.

The Gunners last had a matchday in Naples in 2018-19, winning both legs of their Europa League quarter-final tie. Like Liverpool, Arsenal beat Inter at San Siro last season, coming away with a 3-1 win in January.

In the 36-team group stage, each side has four home games and four away. The top eight in the table qualify directly to the round of 16, while those who finish ninth to 24th go into a play-off to join them.

The order of the fixtures is expected to be confirmed at the weekend and the first round of games will be on September 8-10.

Elsewhere, another English Premier League side is facing a trip to San Siro after Sunderland were drawn against AC Milan in the Europa League group stage. And Bournemouth will host the Rossoneri in the same competition.
