The Como Takeaway ‘Giving the Best of Italy to the World’
By Brian Lee
Two things will stop you in your tracks when you stroll past Passion on the cobbled Via Adamo Del Pero in the heart of Como.
Yes, it’s a sexy name and stands out in capital letters, almost western saloon-style. But it is more the long, winding queue that catches the eye.
“We have lines of people from opening time until closing,” explains Alberto, one of the two brains behind Passion.
Launching in 2017, Passion is more than a takeaway. You can grab a coffee or stop by for an aperitif, but it’s the customised sandwiches that people line the street for.
Alberto says: “It’s like this every day, except on Sunday. On Sunday we sleep.
“We serve customers from local offices and schools as well as tourists from all over the world, and many of them come back. Of course we have singers, actors, footballers, entrepreneurs… but for us, all our customers are the same.
“The best thing about this job is being able to share our culture with them and see their satisfaction.”

That culture is key to the business model that Alberto and Daniele, who went to the same school in Como, stick to. The pair drifted apart after primary school until reuniting in a bar many years later, Alberto serving and Daniele the customer.
Alberto explains: “Since I was little I always wanted to have my own bar. In Daniele I found a great partner because he shared my vision of bringing tradition and the best Italian products to the world. Como is one of the most sought-after destinations for travellers and we want them to experience the best of what Italy has to offer.
“We follow tradition and respect the customer but above all we respect the product. We use the best meats and the end result is a perfect combination for effective word of mouth. Everyone coming here knows they will be enjoying the best Italian product and it is practically accessible to all budgets.”
The bresaola on focaccia with tomatoes and mozzarella was fantastic and full of flavour. And coming in at €8, is there a better bargain in Como?
“We don’t have sandwiches that are more popular than others because everyone has their own tastes and our format (touch screen customisation) allows you to choose your own combination,” Alberto says. “My advice is to avoid messing with tradition by adding non-standard ingredients; a good product should be enjoyed pure.”
Perfect to grab and go on your way to a match at the Stadio Sinigaglia.
