In Italian football terms, the Stadio Del Conero in Ancona is a fairly new construction. The Biancorossi for much of their existence played at the Stadio Dorico in the eastern part of the city.
Opened in 1931, by the time Ancona raced through the divisions under Vincenzo Guerini at the end of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, the club knew it was time to build a new ground.
They finished third in Serie B in the 1991-92 campaign and with the heady heights of Serie A waiting, built an arena outside of town.
It was still under construction as Ancona dipped their toes into the shark-infested waters of top-flight football and they had to use the old Stadio Dorico for a few more months, before moving to their new home in early 1993. This was the Del Conero – unique within Italy due to it being built in a trench. Another surprise was the inaugural match finishing in a 3-0 win over Inter.
The Del Conero had an initial capacity of 23,000 but has been reduced over the years as their fortunes fluctuated. It is an atmospheric ground – helped by having no running track – and has hosted the Italy national team, the most recent a 2003 friendly against Romania.
Here is all you need to know.
What Makes It Special?
The most peculiar aspect of the Stadio Del Conero is the fact it is below ground level.

How To Get There
Located in the Passo Varano district of the city, the Stadio Del Conero is on the outskirts of Ancona, and the best way to get there is by car, which should take less than 10 minutes.
Driving from the centre, go via the Asse-Sud and Strada Provinciale Cameranense before taking the exit for Universita. Then turn left on to Via Bersaglieri D’Italia before following the Stade Provinciale Cameranense and the stadium is on your left.
The bus is also an option from the city centre. Take the Re1 in the direction of Marcelli from Via Guglielmo Marconi. Get off at Ancona (Stadio Conero) and walk 10 minutes to get to the ground. You can also get the train from Ancona’s station. Head towards Pescara, get off at Varano and walk about 15 minutes.

Neighbourhood Tips
There is little in the way of food and drink around the stadium due to its location on the fringe of the city, so the best advice is to get something before heading out.
Need To Know
Ancona’s ultras all sit in the Curva Nord, where you can expect the usual antics and theatrics from the club’s most passionate fans. If you are after something a little more tranquil, the main stand is the place for you.
