Spezia: Stadio Alberto Picco

Located a stone’s throw from La Spezia’s docks, the Stadio Alberto Picco is one of Serie B’s oldest grounds.

Built in 1919 on a site the club acquired from the Italian Navy, the stadium is named after La Spezia’s first ever goalscorer and World War I hero.

Built to resemble the British grounds of the time, in its first inception the Picco featured covered wooden stands, before the introduction of a new concrete stand in 1933.

Three decades later the new stand was joined by the Curva Ferrovia – the Railway End – with the Curva Piscina – the Pool End – built in 1986 following Spezia’s promotion to Serie C1.

By the early 1990s, the Picco underwent a major and long overdue overhaul, with a brand new main stand and Curva Ferrovia replacing the existing structures.

But in a familiar tale for several clubs across the Peninsula, a lack of funds meant work stalled until the turn of the century when Spezia returned to Italian football’s third tier.

The revamp was eventually completed following Spezia promotion to Serie B in 2006 after a 55-year absence to coincide with the club’s centenary celebrations.

In the intervening years, Spezia have experienced bankruptcy, lost their professional status and reached Serie A for the first time in their history.

Through it all, the Picco has remained their only certainty.
