Filippo Inzaghi heads for Spezia this weekend satisfied with Palermo’s recent displays despite their climb towards Serie A being hit by two successive draws.

Palermo will line up in Liguria after sharing the points with Cesena last weekend and Venezia on Tuesday night, but they remain unbeaten through the first six matches of the season and sit third in the table, two points behind Frosinone and Modena.

They also boast the best defence in the division with just two goals conceded although Inzaghi will have to shuffle his rearguard as centre-half Pietro Ceccaroni serves a suspension following his red card against the Venetians.

Nevertheless, the former Milan and Italy striker, aiming to fire the promotion favourites back to the top flight after eight seasons away, remains upbeat.

He said: “We have to continue. Clearly we want to get back to winning soon and on Saturday we have a chance, but we have to continue on this path, with these performances. We are looking to get three points straight away against Spezia.”

Spezia are also coming off the back of a midweek draw – against Reggiana – but unlike Saturday’s opponents they are miles away from where they would have expected to be heading into the second international break of the campaign.

From finishing last season as the best of the rest behind Sassuolo and Pisa, the Little Eagles have dropped to 18th place, with only Mantova and Sampdoria below them and no wins to their name.

Veteran striker Gianluca Lapadula marked his first start of the season with a goal in the 1-1 draw in Reggio Emilia and the 35-year-old insists manager Luca D’Angelo has the players’ backing despite the slow start.

He said: “We’re following the coach and our trust in him has never wavered. That needs to be clear. I can personally say we have a relationship of great respect.

“Right now, we need to be practical with our objectives. We should focus on the attitude we showed in the first half (against Reggiana) and the exceptional effort even when down a man. That’s a great starting point for all of us.”

D’Angelo will be without defender Petko Hristov after he was sent off against Reggiana, becoming the third Spezia player to receive his marching orders this term.
