Napoli’s Nerve-Settler, a Cagliari Cracker and an Atalanta Special… Destination Calcio’s Serie A Goals of the Season
By Editor DC
Few leagues are better for producing outrageous wonder goals than Serie A.
Italy’s top tier provides incredible strikes year in and year out, and so selecting just one to crown as the season’s best is never easy.
A total of 973 goals were scored across 10 months and here, Destination Calcio writers pick their favourites.
Emmet Gates — Alessandro Deiola, Cagliari 3-0 Venezia, May 2025
My pick was not overly important in the grand scheme of the season, coming after Cagliari had already secured safety.
Yes, the finish was exceptional from midfielder Deiola, who bent it into the top corner from just inside the penalty box. But it was the build-up to the strike that was Barcelona-esque.
The interchanges between Gianluca Gaetano, Antoine Makoumbou, Tommaso Augello and Deiola were quick and crisp and they carved Venezia’s beleaguered defence to pieces. The final touch before Deiola’s strike, a backheel from Makoumbou, was delicious.
Honourable mention goes to Matias Soule’s gorgeous free-kick for Roma against Parma in February.
Dan Cancian — Davide Zappacosta, Juventus 0-4 Atalanta, March 2025
For a moment, the look on Ademola Lookman’s face said it all. The Atalanta winger could barely contain his surprise after watching Zappacosta score his side’s third in their 4-0 demolition of Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.
And, frankly, who could blame him? Football has long lost its taste for such finishes, creativity sacrificed on the altar of structure and patterns of play, but Gian Piero Gasperini is one of a dwindling breed of great romantics and here was a goal that encapsulated his philosophy.
Zappacosta and Lookman exchanged passes on the left wing, before the former Chelsea full-back played the ball square towards Sead Kolasinac, the centre-back rampaging forward before flicking it back to his team-mate and continuing his run into the box.
The Bosnian had just enough space to play a delicate backheel back into the full-back’s path, with Zappacosta finishing from a tight angle to put Atalanta 3-0 up.
If one were to script the perfect Gasperini goal, it would probably include a left-back and centre-back exchanging passes in a sweeping move before firing home. This goal was Atalanta at their marauding best.
David Ferrini – Scott McTominay, Napoli 2-0 Cagliari, May 2025
If a goal could say a thousand words, McTominay’s scissor kick screams them all at once. The midfielder’s glorious strike deserves an award for the show of strength, technique and execution but it meant so much more.
With Inter provisionally at the top of the standings and Napoli denied by the Cagliari goalkeeper time and time again, the hopes of an entire city rested on one decisive moment of heroism.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man.
Staving off Gabriele Zappa’s shirt-pulling tactics, McTominay’s athleticism allowed him to adjust his position while keeping the defender at arm’s length. Then, his instincts kicked in.
Many would have attempted a glancing header or chested the ball down. But not our McFratm. The Serie A MVP opted for the most difficult option, unleashing an eight-yard lightning bolt at Alen Sherri’s goal.
Aside from individual brilliance, this Scudetto clincher speaks to how Napoli conducted business in 2024-25: patient build-up from within the defensive half, their statesmen involved in the distribution, and finally, their ball-magnet from Lancaster doing the damage.
Overall, an honourable Serie A goal deserving of sealing the Scudetto and simultaneously firing up the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, capping off an unforgettable title race.
