Mantova 1911, referred to generally as Mantova, have had a rather colourful time of things in the last two decades.
They reached Serie B in 2005 and stayed in the second tier for four years, before suffering relegation after finishing in 20th place.
The relegation was catastrophic for the club as they went bankrupt in the summer of 2010 and had to start again in the Italian football pyramid as Mantova FC.
Located on the outer reaches of the Lombardy region, Mantova is around a three-hour drive from Milan, and is only around 45 minutes away from Verona.

Mantova were taken over by Verona owner Maurizio Setti in 2018, who sold half his shares in the club in 2022 and then the rest a year later. The club is now owned by Filippo Piccoli.
Mantova play at Stadio Danilo Martelli, named in honour of the player who died in the Superga air disaster in 1949 that wiped out the Grande Torino team.
The stadium was initially named in honour of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini but was changed to Stadio Settimo Leoni before being known as Stadio John R. Nation, after an American soldier who died in combat near Mantova in World War II. It took its current name in 1949.
One of the oldest stadiums in Serie B, the Martelli’s capacity is slightly north of 7,000, modest even by the division’s standards.
