Frosinone Eyeing Fifth Straight Win to Continue Escape Bid Against Sorry Cosenza

Timing, as the old adage goes, is everything and Frosinone can certainly attest to that.

Last season, I Canarini nearly pulled off a miraculous escape to remain in Serie A, only to have their top-flight status ripped away in the final seconds of the last match of the campaign.

Come the end of November, they languished at the bottom of Serie B and looked destined for a second relegation on the spin following a run of one win in six games.

Paolo Bianco’s appointment then looked like rearranging furniture on the deck of the Titanic as he lost his first two games in charge, against Sudtirol and Bari.

But he steadied the ship with draws against Catanzaro, Reggiana and Salernitana, before a run of four consecutive wins lifted Frosinone up to 12th, three points ahead of 16th-placed Mantova, who would face Sampdoria in a relegation play-off if the season ended now.

The Blucerchiati felt the full force of Frosinone’s renaissance on Saturday, with I Canarini triumphing 3-0 at Marassi courtesy of goals from Ben Lhassine Kone, Ilario Monterisi and Fares Ghedjemis.

Frosinone may not be clear of the relegation quagmire yet, but such are the fine margins in Serie B, they are also just six points away from Cesena, who occupy the final play-off spot and host Bianco’s men next week.

That trip to the Manuzzi kicks off a torrid run-in, which includes visits to league leaders Sassuolo and second-placed Pisa either side of a home game against third-placed Spezia, which makes the fixture against Cosenza on Saturday afternoon even more crucial.

The Calabrians are bottom of Serie B, five points behind 19th-placed Salernitana, nine points from safety and their return to Serie C looks all but confirmed with seven games to play.

Cosenza have lost four of their last six games, conceding 13 goals without scoring in those defeats, and Massimiliano Alvini’s return over the international break is surely nothing more than a desperate roll of the dice at this stage.

The 54-year-old was sacked at the end of February and Cosenza averaged just 0.89 points per game in his first 28 matches in charge this season, which makes a drastic upturn in fortunes appear unlikely.

Add to that Bianco’s knack of beating relegation rivals. Frosinone have taken 13 points from a possible 15 against teams looking to avoid the drop, drawing with Salernitana before beating Mantova, Carrarese, Brescia and Sampdoria.

If they extend that run to five straight wins the great escape bid could well turn into the unlikeliest of promotion pushes.
