Como, or Lago di Como to give it its proper name, has plenty of restaurants for all occasions. 

Normally not at the top of people’s list in Italy when it comes to food, the city by the lake will surprise you with its ample array of eateries, from high budget to low and everywhere in between, Como has something for everyone.

On a recent trip to northern Italy, Destination Calcio spent a day in the city to watch the Lariani’s 2-0 win against Lazio at the Stadio Sinigaglia, with Nico Paz in particularly fine form.

But before that there was the small matter of picking where to eat, and an excellent choice was made by the team to seek out Osteria Figli dei Fiori.

Located down a quiet street in via Borgo Vico, away from the hustle and bustle around the lake, Figli dei Fiori has two restaurants, one on either side of the small road.

Figli dei Fiori’s osteria is more catered towards the shared dining experience. Plates are positioned in the middle of wood-panelled tables, with their menu built around the concept.

The bistrot is more of a classical Italian experience consisting of dishes for the individual, with a collection of pastas for primi and a selection of meats for secondi.

As for Destination Calcio, we found ourselves in the osteria side. There is very much a nature vibe to Fiori’s decor, all plants, trees and at times a very stripped back aesthetic, but yet it works. 

While sipping glasses of red vino, plates were shared among the team. 

First up were slices of carpaccio, with a dash of fruit and cheese, which set the tone for the feast to come.

Next was the potato gnocchi, served with lemon theme gratin, pears, walnuts and gorgonzola cheese that truly melted in the mouth. 

Another pasta dish, this one with burrata, spinach and cherry tomatoes, was devoured with equal aplomb.

The final stage of our Tour de France of exquisite food came in the shape of steak with a portion of patate al forno — fried potatoes — which had a hint of basil and were absolutely exceptional.

We decided that, having not had enough, we opted for a cheeky tiramisu to seal the deal. It arrived not long after and was similarly fantastic.

A round of coffees signalled the end of our marathon session, bellies full and ready for game time.
