Avellino Playbook: Your Unrivalled Calcio Experience in Irpinia
By Dan Cancian
Located 30 miles east of Naples, Avellino retains some of its Romanesque architecture despite a series of violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from Mount Vesuvius.
Almost reduced to rubble by the devastating earthquake that hit Irpinia in November 1980, which caused almost 3000 deaths, the Clock Tower has been entirely rebuilt and stands proud as the city’s symbol.
Avellino, of course, is also the town Tony Soprano’s family hails from in the hit TV show The Sopranos after his grandparents emigrated from Campania to the US at the beginning of the 20th century.
And it also has a football team. Here’s all you need to know.

Where To Stay
Avellino is pretty compact and staying in the centro storico means you will have the old town landmarks such as Palazzo Caracciolo and the main art gallery – which is housed in a former jail dating back to the days when the House of Bourbon ruled over Campania – on your doorstep. It is also not too far from Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main shopping street.
The main train station is just a five-minute car ride away from the centro storico, which offers a variety of options in terms of accommodation, from budget-friendly Airbnbs to more high-end hotels.
Where To Eat
Less than a mile from the Stadio Partenio-Lombardi, Osteria Gino e la Giraffa offers a traditional local experience, with mains starting at €14.
Hirpus Wine & Food Experience on Viale Italia, meanwhile, specialises in authentic Irpinian flavours and local wine pairings. Make sure you try the Nerano-style meatballs but be prepared to queue as this spot is fairly small and popular with locals.
Similarly, Il Tagliere Divino, a short walk from the train station, is the ideal spot for those looking to pair local Irpinia wines with traditional meat and cheese platters. An aperitivo platter comes in at €6, while a larger portion for dinner will set you back €18.
And given that Avellino is relatively close to Naples, it would be remiss not to try pizza while in the area. A margherita at Il Testone on the edge of the centro storico is €8, while at locals’ favourite Pizzeria Balbi you can get one for €6. The restaurant is a 10-minute cab ride from the old town, or you can work up an appetite by walking it in under an hour.
Where To Drink
Located a stone’s throw away from the stadium, the Old Style Pub is arguably the most convenient spot for a drink before kick-off. It is a classic pub-style environment that caters to fans looking for a beer and a quick bite and is a hugely popular among Avellino fans.
A short walk from the stadium area on Viale Italia, Tuke caters for families looking for a pre-match meal and fans just opting for a couple of drinks before the game.
Slightly farther away, a 10-minute walk from the ground, La Fornarina is a great option for takeaways pizzas and a quick beer before or after the match.
Away from the ground, Nobilis at the eastern end of the centro storico is a popular spot for cocktails and wine and is open until 2am.
Across the old town, you have plenty options if you fancy a glass of wine in a perfect spot for people watching as Il Tappo Brillo, Eldo Bistrot and Dejavu are all within a few minutes of each other. Or head south in the centro storico towards GiuAle Soul Pub, a less polished but not less welcoming watering hole.

Don’t Forget
Tickets – Avellino tickets are available on the club website, online on www.boxol.it and www.go2.it and at authorised Go2 selling points in the city
In 2025-26, tickets for the Curva Sud were available for €15 while the Tribuna Terminio was €25. Tickets for women, over-65s and under-14s were cheaper while children under six could go free.
If you are picking up tickets at the stadium or at the ticket office, remember to have your ID with you and leave a bit of time as collection offices can get busy.
Kick-off times will be moved for television, so bear that in mind when arranging a trip far in advance.
Merchandise – Official Avellino merchandise can be purchased on the club website or at the store in Via Vincenzo Cannaviello 25 in the city, which is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 1:30pm and from 4pm to 8pm.
Did You Know?
Avellino’s heydays in the 1980s coincided with a number of flamboyant signings at the Partenio, namely Brazil internationals Juary and Dirceu, who became cult heroes in Campania. The same goes for Austrian centre-forward Walter Schachner, who scored 13 league goals in 48 games across three seasons after joining from Torino.
Getting There
The best option from the UK is to fly into Naples. Avellino is about an hour by coach from Naples Capodichino Airport with tickets costing between €3 and €8. The train is a bit quicker.
Need Another Football Fix?
Campania has more than enough calcio to appease the football purist. Napoli is easy to get to while Salernitana is also about an hour.
