STADIUM GUIDES

Cagliari – Sardegna Arena

The fourth-smallest ground by capacity in Serie A this season, the Sardegna Arena has been Cagliari’s home since 2016.

Located south-east of the city centre in Sardinia’s capital city, the stadium – which is known as Unipol Domus for sponsorship reasons – is the third ground Cagliari have called home in just over a decade.

The Rossoblu moved out of the Stadio Sant’Elia in 2012 after the venue, which hosted England’s three group games at the 1990 World Cup fell into disrepair despite being renovated three times in 25 years.

Due to disagreements between then-club owner Massimo Cellino and the city’s administration, Cagliari’s plans for a brand new stadium fell through and, with the Sant’Elia no longer considered fit for purpose, the Sardinians moved out at the end of the 2011-12 season.

The move was so abrupt that Cagliari were forced to play their remaining home games in Trieste, some 650 miles away.

By next season, the club relocated to the Stadio Is Arenas – a temporary makeshift stadium – in Quartu Sant’Elena, less than 10 miles from the Sant’Elia.

But security concerns over Stadio Is Arena’s viability as a top-flight stadium eventually forced Cagliari to backtrack and return to their old ground ahead of the 2014-15 season.

Just over a year later, Cagliari’s city council and the region authorities belatedly gave the green light to the project for the Sardegna Arena, a new stadium to be built just north of the Sant’Elia, which served as the club’s home since 1970.

The Rossoblu moved into the Sardegna Arena in 2017, with the venue being used as the club’s provisional home until work was completed four years later.
