Cagliari Stadium Guide: Stadio Unipol Domus

Built beside the crumbling wreck of the old Stadio Sant’Elia, the Unipol Domus is Cagliari’s temporary home until a new stadium is built.

They are hoping that will be sooner rather than later with Euro 2032 host cities still to be decided.

For now though, Sardinians pack out the Domus every other week, so here’s all you need to know about the 16,000-seater stadium.

What Makes It Special?

This is a basic, no-frills structure. There is nothing fancy about the Domus. But with the intimate stands being so close to the pitch it’s loud, it’s chaotic, it’s fantastic.

And next to it is the decaying skeleton of the Stadio Sant’Elia, which is worth seeing.

How To Get There

Located about 3km from the centre of the city in the Sant’Elia district, the best way to get to the Domus is by bus. If arriving at Cagliari’s Matteotti train station, take line 3, 5 or 6 towards Poetto/Sant’Elia from Piazza Matteotti and get off near the Amsicora. WIt’s a short walk the rest of the way.

Walking all the way is a pleasant experience if you want to work off a nice lunch… and it should take no more than 40 minutes.

Neighbourhood Tips

You can see blocks of flats from the stadium and the area around the ground is more residential and functional than the pretty images of the city centre. But don’t be put off arriving early. You are still near the sea while the food trucks and the smell coming off them add more flavour to a truly authentic matchday vibe.

Need To Know

Cagliari’s ultras, known as The Sconvolts 87, sit in the Curva Nord and generate all the noise and chaos. The Curva Sud is slightly less intimidating and has the visiting fans at the corner. The Distinti and Tribuna sections that run along the side of the pitch offer the best views of the action and the curvas.
