Como Stadium Guide: Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia

The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia sits on the edge of Lake Como and has been home to the city’s football team since 1927.

It was named after local rowing champion Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a World War I hero who won the single and double sculls European titles on the lake in 1911.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of your visit.

What Makes It Special?

Just take a look at the pictures. The Sinigaglia sits so close to the lake that, depending on where you are in the stadium, you can see the water while watching the game. Yes, it’s small – it holds a touch over 12,000 fans – while three of the four stands are uncovered and parts of the ground look their age. But all of this is part of the charm.

Jonathan Civitella, a Como fan who moved to Italy from the United States a few years ago, said: “This place should be treated like a UNESCO heritage site. Maybe increase capacity a tiny bit but after that, do not touch it. In the States you’ve got places like Wrigley Park or Fenway. In Como, the Sinigaglia. This is an iconic stadium. To tear it down and rebuild, even in the same place, doesn’t make sense. Keep it the way it is. It’s a cool. Not the most luxurious but that’s what makes it special.”

How To Get There

Como has three train stations with San Giovanni the closest to the stadium, no more than a few hundred metres. Trains from Milano Centrale and Milano Garibaldi stop here. Depending on where you are travelling from, Como Borghi is on the outskirts while Como Lago is on the eastern side of the city centre. The ferry is also an option depending where on the lake you are travelling from.

Neighbourhood Tips

Como is a small city, so almost everything you need is within walking distance. For pre-match atmosphere and a place to grab a drink before the game Bar Pino is about as close as you can get to the Sinigaglia without being inside, while Ostello Bello is just across the road. Como’s own beer, La Comasca, is available inside the ground and you will never be short of places to eat before/after the match.

Need To Know

The Curva Como is home to the most vocal supporters and is located behind the goal on the western side. Away fans are housed in the Curva Monumento Ospiti behind the opposite goal. The premium seats are in the Tribuna Coperta, the largest stand, facing the lake while the Distini stand runs the length of the pitch on the lakeside. The layout of this unique arena means there is nowhere with a bad view of the action.

Tickets

The ticket window for collection is on the east side of the stadium, between the Tribuna Coperta and the Curva Est. All the information about how and when to buy tickets for Como matches can be found in our guide.
